Come explore the past with British soldiers at Fort Ingall. Admire many artefacts, watch a musket-firing demonstration, listen to the firing of the Noon Gun and then light the powder yourself, if you want!
Exhibitions
Preparing for War presents a human perspective on a border conflict that took place nearly 175 years ago. Meet Dr. Jean-Étienne Landry, the garrison physician, and Lieutenant Frederick Lenox Ingall, a military engineer. Learn about the history of the fort and the many artefacts found during archaeological digs. Dressed in period military and civilian clothing, our guides recreate the life that reigned within this field fortification.
Ready for War is an alternative history exhibition that answers the following question: What would have happened if the Americans had attacked Fort Ingall? Discover the various defensive tactics used at the time and learn more about warfare in the 19th century, all in a fun way!
An audio tour lasting about 1.5 hours will immerse you in the fascinating history of the fort. Available in English and French, this tour is free in the spring and fall and cost $7 (taxes included) in the summer.
Demonstrations
The Noon Gun is a British tradition of firing the fort’s cannon at noon to mark the time. Since there was no daylight savings at that time, the cannon is fired every day at 1 pm.
You also won’t want to miss the musket-firing demonstrations! Before the end of each visit, you will have the opportunity to smell the gunpowder up close!
Free activities
The team at Fort Ingall offers visitors a series of free activities, including how to light an old-fashioned fire, bannock making and tasting, a writing workshop using an old-fashioned quill pen, a cartridge-making workshop and an introduction to archaeology.
