The Little Red School House is part of the Old Harry Heritage Site. Located in a bright and welcoming former one-room schoolhouse, the museum is a reminder of a simpler time, when students of all ages gathered together for their daily lessons.
The schoolhouse originally opened in 1922 to provide an education to children living in the village of Old Harry. Located in Grosse-Île, it was and remains the cradle of the English-speaking community in the Îles de la Madeleine.
The museum gives visitors the opportunity to explore the former schoolhouse. The classroom contains the school’s original blackboard and hardwood floor as well as two desks from that period. Over the years, the museum’s collection has expanded and evolved to include old photographs, first-person accounts and reminiscences as well as various artefacts, all of which will help you immerse yourself in this historical period.
In addition to offering guided tours by locals, the museum provides with a glimpse into the history and way of life of the Islands’ English-speaking community.
