Dating back to 1907, this lighthouse offers a splendid view of the city of Matane and the sea. From the top of the cylindrical lighthouse tower, which is over 20 metres (65 feet) high, you can observe maritime traffic, wind turbines and the Chic-Choc Mountains.
Visit this site to discover the history of the Matane Lighthouse, its keepers and its preservation after nearly being demolished in the 1950s. The lighthouse is open daily from early June to late September. Among the activities and services offered, you can visit the interactive and virtual exhibition located in the lightkeeper’s house. This is your opportunity to discover snowmobiling and backcountry skiing in the Chic-Choc Mountains in the middle of the summer!
Admission to the museum is free. Only climbing the lighthouse tower is subject to a fee. You can visit the tower on your own, with or without an audio guide. Tours with an interpreter guide are also available (stay tuned for the schedule of these guided tours). Please book your tour by calling 418-562-1065 or 1-877-762-8263. Wear appropriate footwear to climb the lighthouse tower: high heels and sandals without heel straps are prohibited.
Note that the lightkeeper’s house also houses the La Matanie tourist information bureau as well as a boutique selling products and souvenirs made by local artists and artisans.
