In 1873, businessman Lord Mount Stephen established a fishing estate at the confluence of the Matapédia and Causapscal rivers. By 1908, the Matamajaw Salmon Club was one of the most famous private salmon fishing camps in the province. The luxurious establishment welcomed many prestigious members and guests over the years, until it was purchased by the Québec government in the 1970s. In 1984, it was classified a heritage property by Québec’s Ministry of Culture and Communications and has since become a museum.
